Since September, Horry County police have been seeking the identity of a person whose skeleton was found in a wooded area outside Conway.

They didn't have much to go on.

Within the first few days of a hunter's Sept. 29 discovery of the bones behind the Veterans Affairs and Horry County Parks and Recreation Building, investigators learned that the bones were human, said Horry County police Sgt. Robert Kegler.

SLED's scientists determined that the victim was a man between 30 and 50 years old who was between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet 3 inches tall. He'd been dead between six months and five years, Kegler said.

The man died of gunshot wounds, said Kegler, who couldn't remember using a facial reconstruction for a victim in any other county case in his 11 years on the force.

"We've done compositesketches and things like that in the past," he said, citing the sketch drawn of Baby Boy Horry, the newborn whose body was found beside S.C. 544 nearly two years ago.

Such a reconstruction is not unusual for SLED, said Jennifer Timmons, communications director. "The forensic artists do more sketches, but they also do these facial reconstructions. ... These are very skilled people who did this sort of thing."

Lexington Medical Center assisted in the process by doing a CT scan of the victim so they could create a reconstruction that shows what the person likely resembled when he was alive, she said.
